Although we might be the travel experts here at Latin Excursions, we also know that the ones you might take most stock in are your friends, family members, and fellow travelers. Well, the people have spoken and according to the 10 Best Readers' Choice Awards and USA Today poll, the Galapagos Islands is your top bucket list destination for 2014!

This is really no wonder at all. The Galapagos archipelago found in the Pacific Ocean just 1.5 hours by plane from mainland Ecuador has captured the minds and hearts of so many visitors for many reasons. It has a long prehistoric history with grand tales of geographic evolution as well as animals that have survived without interference with the human race, although it wasn't discovered by modern man until the 1800's. Thanks to dedicated conservation efforts and investments, the Galapagos Islands has retained its rich natural resources and purity so that future generations may also enjoy its wonders.

What kind of natural resources are we talking about? Well, the islands are infamous for its animal life, especially the endemic species not found anywhere else in the world. Not only that, when you are in the Galapagos, you make way for the animals, not the other way around! As you explore the islands by boat or land, you will see marine iguanas, rare cormorant and finch birds, ancient giant turtles, island penguins, and an unimaginable array of colorful sea life (including sharks of all varieties!) at your toes and fingertips.

There is so much to see and so many ways to go about experiencing it. One way is to embark on a Galapagos cruise, aboard either an expeditionary vessel which can take you on a 4 to 8 day journey across the ocean and between the most remote islands. Not only will you be able to gaze at the rich volcanic landscapes in awe while sailing, you will also be able to disembark and get intimate with nature by snorkeling, hiking, swimming, and more. Back on board your Galapagos boat, you will be treated to the best creature comforts and food cooked up by your resident chef and crew.

On the other hand, you may also consider an island-based experience in the Galapagos Islands. In this way, you can stay a few nights in a local, well appointed hotel on one of the 3 main islands--Puerto Ayora, San Cristobal, or Isabela--and go on day trips to nearby islands at your leisure. Your activities schedule is much more flexible in this way, so feel free to lounge around on the beach or chase that funny fish underwater with your mask and fins as long as you want!
