On August 9, 2014, some of tourism's biggest stars and most important groups gathered in Quito to attend the grand 2014 World Travel Awards event, what is essentially the Oscars of the travel sector. These people, may of whom travel the world for a living, marveled at the capital city and all the colonial charm it has to offer.

Not only was Ecuador the host, however, it was also nominated in a number of categories including the best luxury train in South America, the best new airport in South America, the best meeting and incentives hotel, the best green eco hotel, best sustainable destination, and the top touristic destination to visit in South America (for which it has been consistently nominated for years!).

In the end, Ecuador won 8 out of their total 18 nominations at this year's World Travel Awards. A few notable wins:

  • South America's Leading Airport 2014 (Mariscal Sucre International Airport, Quito)
  • South America's Leading Destination 2014 (Quito) (winner 2nd year in a row!)
  • South America's Leading Green Destination 2014 (Ecuador)
  • South America's Leading Tourist Board 2014 (Ecuador Ministry of Tourism)
  • South America's Leading Green Hotel 2014 (Finch Bay Eco Hotel, Galapagos Islands)

In total, Ecuador's wins only continue to shed light and focus on the country's incredible variety and portfolio of world class destinations, culture, gastronomy, history, and adventure. From the Devil's Nose train which takes you along one of the highest railways on earth, to the wild and fanciful creatures of the Galapagos Islands, to the deep reaches of the Amazon Basin, Ecuador allows you to see some of South America's best elements all on one trip.
