Is it vacation time yet?

Though I'm not proud of it, I'm going to have to admit it -- as I'm writing this blog, I'm thinking of how I'm going to weasel and scheme some more vacation days from work. Should I fake an injury? Cause a real injury? Lie about an aunt's godmother's sister's twice-removed's wedding? Fake a rare stomache flu or should I just let a wild animal loose in the office to cause a distraction? Decisions, decisions.

Therein lies the danger of reading the 2013 Conde Nast Traveler Reader's Choice list - Once you've read the top 5 Central and South American cities, how can you possibly resist the urge to travel and explore?

Every year Conde Nast readers survey their favourite cities based on the following criteria: culture, friendliness, atmosphere, lodging, restaurants and shopping. But, what do these awards really mean? With almost 79 000 survey participants judging with the most discerning and scrutinizing eye, the winners are awarded, receive a stamp of approval and become synonymous to luxury, quality and the innovation we've come to expect from Conde Nast Award Winners.

Unsurprisingly my favourite city in Peru, Cusco, made it to their top 5 Central and South American cities list with an impressive 73.1 rating, scoring high in its culture and friendliness. The honour of top spot went to the famous Argentinian city of Buenos Aires with a 74.2 rating, romancing its tourists with its restaurants' fine cuisine and diverse culture. For Colombia, Cartagena received a high 70.7, boasting its beautiful bay, beaches and a gorgeous walled city filled with history. The Southern Brazilian town of Paraty proved that the size of a city or town does not measure the worth of your experience. Earning a 70.6, Paraty received high grades for its friendliness and kind and welcoming atmosphere. Not to be left out, Guatemala's "must-see-town" Antigua de Guatemala scored a 70.3 for its charming atmosphere, quaint shops, friendliness and culture.

Though it's hard to argue with 79 000 survey participants and calculated results, why take their word for it? I think it's time for us to see if we agree with these scores and travel -- get out there and eat, drink, dance and explore. So let's all start crafting a way to take those extra days or even weeks off! With an impressive list like that, we'll be needing it. And when all excuses fail, just blame the list.
