Mashpi Lodge - Who is it for?

If you are considering seeing a part of Ecuador that few people have access to, a stay at Mashpi Lodge in the middle of a cloud forest might be what you are looking for.

You might be asking, what is a cloud forest? And what's the difference between a cloud forest and a rainforest like the Amazon?

  • A rainforest is tropical, more defined by dense tree growth and distinct rainy and dry seasons. In Ecuador, the Amazon can be considered overall as flat and vast with a wide diversity of creatures to discover. Here you can see the vast estuary that forms the largest body of water on earth and how critical this is to our planet. As well, there are countless traditional and cultural human settlements to be found deep within the jungle.
  • A cloud forest, on the other hand, is a mountainous area that is ruled by cloud cover for most of the year, yielding incredible sources of flora and fauna diversity not see outside of such a particular microclimate. It lies on the cliffsides of the Andes mountain range facing the Pacific Ocean and as you go up (or down) every few meters, new species of birds, frogs, and other life emerge. It is smaller in size than the Amazon and can be called megadiverse, meaning diversity is more concentrated within its multi-altitude nature.

Mashpi Lodge is Ecuador's finest eco-luxury experience for those not wanting to rough it in the Amazon but is also interested in seeing wildlife in an exotic environment. Although only about 3.5 hours by vehicle from Quito, the capital of Ecuador, the lodge feels multiple worlds away from the city.

In addition to the refreshing sounds of nature everywhere you walk, visitors have many activities to choose from. Riding the new canopy gondola (available as of July 2013) across the tops of the trees is sure to be a favorite, as well as walking the many trails where you can go in search of concealed creatures, discovering the canopy by sky bike, enjoying the hummingbird viewpoint that attracts 22 different species, admiring the waterfalls in the area, and learning more about life in the cloud forest through various expert lectures and presentations. Back at the lodge, you can find a library, outdoor terrace, WiFi Internet throughout, a wellness space with Jacuzzi and much more, and a staff celebrated for its friendliness, attentiveness, and knowledge.

After exhausting yourself with so many fun activities, you can rest assured that comfort will be waiting for you back in your room. Mashpi Lodge has 19 Wayra Rooms of 34 square meters each, and 3 Yaku Suites of 37 square meters each. There are various options for connecting rooms, balconies, and bed arrangements as you need to accommodate your travel group.
