Lima is becoming an increasingly popular destination for foreign travelers, finally breaking from the misconception that it is merely a logistical stopover. Taking much of the credit for this is the capital city?s prominent culinary scene, now visited and revered by foodies from around the globe. So, when you?re on your way to the Incan heartland of Cusco, the Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu, we encourage you to meander Lima?s colonial plazas and seaside promenades, visit its superbly curated museums and art galleries, and of course, try the unrivaled ceviche.

Avid ceviche devotees ourselves, the Latin Excursions team recommends the following places in Lima:

1. Pescados Capitales. This classic choice prepares traditional seafood dishes, with unusual names related to the Seven Deadly Sins. Pescados Capitales is located in Miraflores and is open for lunch and dinner every day of the week.

2. La Red. This cevicheria has been around for decades. With one location in Miraflores and another in San Migeul, La Red offers varieties of ceviches, tiraditos, causas, and other savory Peruvian dishes. It is open only for lunch and is very popular amongst lime?os, the locals.

3. Cala Restaurant and Bar. This establishment is situated along the ocean in Lima?s bohemian Barranco neighborhood, and it offers a fusion menu focusing primarily on seafood. Cala?s is open Monday through Saturday for lunch and dinner, and on Sundays for dinner only. We recommend going for lunch, and trying the ceviche sampler.

Of course, there are also world-renowned options such as La Mar, and Lima offers many types of international cuisines as well ? from Mediterranean tapas to Creole or Italian fare. When you plan your journey with Latin Excursions, we will happily recommend restaurants specific to your tastes, and make reservations upon request (usually recommended, since restaurants fill often).

Craving ceviche now? Take a look at our Marvels of Peru itinerary, and keep in mind that the trip may be customized to your liking, to ensure that your appetite for Peruvian gastronomy is sufficiently quenched.
