Amazon in Style
The Amazon Basin is home to the largest tropical forest and greatest biodiversity
on the planet. This adventure takes you to untouched
corners of the Amazon, but, of course, always in style.
You’ll travel along the Tapajós River,
with its transparent waters and sandy beaches, passing
through villages and smaller rivers. Explore the Arapiuns
and Aruã Rivers by canoe. Along with the unusual
clear waters (unique in the Amazon basin), you’ll
see enormous trees, like the castanheira, and dine
on regional seafood. Visit Urucureá, a small
village whose population is known for its handicrafts,
and spend your last night anchored at an isolated
beach near Santarém.
Jacques Cousteau described this
area as the 'Caribbean of the Amazon,'
and a trek through the Tapajós National Forest
is a unique experience. With 600,000 hectares in the
western region of Para, the area contains the villages
of Belterra, Rurópolis, Averio and Placas.
Its borders are route BR163, the Cupari River and
the Tapajós River. There are 1,200 families
living in the forest who practice subsistence agriculture
and have developed projects like manufacturing furniture
from dead wood and accessories made from vegetable
leather. IBAMA, the Brazilian environmental institute,
is involved with sustainability projects in the region.
