Chile Tours by Latin Excursions
In the north, the drifting silent sands of the Atacama Desert reveal ancient remains of lost indigenous civilizations. Further south, gentle landscapes of orchards and the vineyards which produce Chile’s delicious wines surround the energetic city of Santiago, in which Spanish influences from the colonial past mingle harmoniously with the contemporary architecture of a twenty-first century capital.
Traveling south from Santiago, intense greens and blues dominate the incredible region known as the Lake District, with lush forests, waterfalls and green lakes and rivers teeming with trout. Set against spectacular volcanoes, the Lake District is a sporting paradise dotted with beautiful quaint towns.
Perhaps the most stunning panoramas in Chile lie in Patagonia. Here, the coast splinters into a trailing archipelago, leaving the mainland and forming a labyrinth of fjords and magnificent blue glaciers. In the midst of this glorious chaos lies one of Chile’s most spectacular national parks, Torres del Paine. Rising 2000 meters from the Patagonian steppe, the majestic granite massifs which give the park its name soar skywards in a geological drama unlike no other in the world.
One common misconception is the thought that Patagonia belongs exclusively to Chile, or on the other hand, that it lies strictly within Argentine borders. In fact, it is a vast region that stretches across both countries from the Lake District to the Atlantic Ocean in the north and then south to where land disappears and the oceans converge.
Another popular misconception is that Patagonia is inaccessible due to its remoteness and ruggedness. That may have been the case in the past, but is not so any longer as travel is possible by helicopter and jets with numerous airports throughout the region. There are also spectacular luxury hotels with all the comforts one would want, gourmet cuisine and the pampering you desire.
Chile is such a beautiful and extraordinarily varied country. In this land of contrast and extremes, the result will be a remarkable odyssey; a journey with its memories lasting a lifetime.
