ARRIVE LIMA

Touch down in Lima’s international airport and, depending on your time of arrival, head straight to the Amazon on a connecting flight. Otherwise, walk to your nearby hotel, the Wyndham, accompanied by a private guide. Although you are staying close to the airport ahead of a flight to the Amazon Rainforest tomorrow, you could take advantage of any free time in Lima to enjoy some of the city’s highlights.

If opting for a guided city tour, many of Lima’s main attractions can be enjoyed including the pretty Plaza Mayor, colonial buildings such as the Government Palace or Basilica and Convent of San Francisco. Then there are the boutiques, leafy residential areas and vibrant Pacific Ocean boulevards of Barranco and Miraflores. For gourmands, a culinary tour in Lima serves as a worthy introduction to both the country and the cuisine it’s so famous for.

LIMA / SACRED VALLEY

After breakfast, you are taken to Lima Airport for an assisted check-in ahead of your flight to Cusco. Here, you are met by a private guide and driver, setting off to the Sacred Valley. Along the way to your hotel, stop at the Awanacancha Textile and Camelid Center. Meet the Llamas and Alpacas, while also witnessing local women at work, dexterously weaving the wool into elaborate textiles, which you can purchase from the souvenir store.

To finish this enchanting day, enjoy a delicious home-cooked meal at the authentic Hacienda Huayoccari, a working farm which serves up traditional dishes using whichever seasonal ingredients are grown onsite. The surrounding Sacred Valley views here are simply stunning, tempting you to head out and explore it all on horseback with the hacienda’s guides.

SACRED VALLEY

Begin day three of your essential Peru tour with a relaxing and scenic kayaking session on Piuray Lagoon, a beautifully tranquil spot surrounded by grass covered plains, native forest and undulating mountains. OLLANTAYTAMBO / MACHU PICCHU

Today, prepare for the iconic Lost City of the Incas: Machu Picchu, which is even more jaw-dropping in reality than you could ever imagine. A private transfer whisks you off to the train station in Ollantaytambo, where you board the Vistadome to Aguas Calientes. This journey isn’t your usual train ride, but an immersive experience with dancers, food and spectacular views of the shifting Sacred Valley scenery outside.

Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, your guide greets you and together make the onward bus journey up from town. Before exploring Machu Picchu properly, take lunch at the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge to enjoy first class food with unbeatable views of the ruins. MACHU PICCHU / CUSCO

Wake up in your charming guest room at Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel, enveloped by 12 acres of woodland and the trickling Urubamba River. While here, why not make use of the Andean sauna and spa, before venturing to Machu Picchu. You might want to climb up Wayna Picchu, the citadel’s distinctive jagged peak, or discover the Inca Bridge, reached via a 30-minute trek along the cliffside.

Another Machu Picchu activity is trekking to a privileged viewpoint of the Incans themselves, the Sun Gate or ‘Inti Punku’. PERUVIAN AMAZON – TAMBOPATA NATIONAL RESERVE

At Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica, guided excursions are all included and help you delve deeper into the rainforest. This morning, there’s an opportunity to canoe along Lake Sandoval, spotting species like the endangered Giant River Otter, Red Howler Monkeys, Macaws and Yellow-spotted Sideneck Turtles. Take in the extraordinary sight of this tranquil lake, edged by tall, leafy trees that makes for a beautiful backdrop for this canoeing excursion.

After lunch back at Inkaterra, gear up for an afternoon activity walking along the lodge’s very own canopy walkway, towering at 30m above ground level for the best views of resident wildlife, including Toucans, Woodpeckers and Trogons. Make your way up the tower for your first glimpse of the treetops, navigating hanging bridges while keeping an eye out for all the many species that dwell up here.

PUERTO MALDONADO / LIMA / DEPARTURE

Tuck into a delicious Inkaterra breakfast this morning before setting off by motorized canoe to Puerto Maldonado, where you can enjoy one final excursion before catching your flight. The Butterfly House is home to around 1250 species, that flutter between the tropical plants and flowers within a pretty garden, created specifically for these creatures. Tour the garden with one of the Butterfly House’s biologists, before heading on to the airport nearby for your flight to Lima, and from there, home.
