Designed by innovative Peruvian architect Jordi Puig, the Aria Amazon is a classic and luxurious riverboat. This striking black hulled vessel measures 45 meters (148 ft) and accommodates a maximum of 32 guests and 26 crew, including a paramedic and four English-speaking naturalist guides. Refurbished with upgrades such as state of the art lighting and top quality linens, the Aria is reminiscent of the sophistication of a 5 star boutique hotel. Natural wood flooring and neutral hues create a calming and indulgently comfortable backdrop from which to focus on the captivating landscape. The Aria is spacious, yet intimate enough to feel entirely exclusive, and incorporates generous lounging and dining areas with gourmet Peruvian cuisine.

TRAVEL IN SOPHISTICATION AND DECADENCE

The refined interior of the Aria Amazon dining room has been stylishly finished with contemporary Peruvian art, fine china and crystal glassware. Woven tapestry of Indigenous Peruvian fibers frame the sleeping quarters within the 16 private and spacious enclaves. Four of the suites can adjoin, perfect for families or groups of friends. The top level Observation Deck is complemented by the Indoor Lounge, with a fully stocked bar at one end and a tightly edited library at the other, along with fresh Amazon flowers and unique artifacts in between. Outside, cushioned loungers under a soaring canopy encourage relaxation and river gazing without concern for the sun’s glare. The Aria’s outdoor Jacuzzi is perfectly poised to observe pink river dolphins or to simply cool off after a shore excursion in the lush rainforest.

INFORMATIVE AND PERSONALIZED EXPERIENCE

The aesthetic beauty of the Aria is matched by attentive, personalized service from long serving staff that quickly learn guest names and personal preferences. Do not be surprised if the observant staff remember your ideal Peruvian coffee or your preferred fine South American or European wine. With four naturalists on board, opportunities for learning abound. Coffee table books featuring the Amazon are available for perusing and educational discussions are held in the lounge area. These entertaining forums are led by English speaking naturalist guides on topics relevant to the day’s adventures, from endangered Taricaya turtle repopulation to the secrets of mixing a perfect pisco sour.

Day2

Pacaya Samiria National Reserve: Amazon Park / Yanayacu Pucate / Nauta Caño

This morning, step into the Amazon Park to experience the unique Canopy Walkway, an experience unequaled in the rainforest. At a height of over 25 meters (85 feet) and extending for 500 meters (one-third of a mile), the Canopy Walkway provides a sweeping view of the rainforest from the treetops. There’s no better vantage point for observing the Amazon’s dramatic wildlife and vegetation. Suspended between 14 of the area’s largest rainforest trees, it is one of the longest canopy walkways in the world.

Afterward, you’ll be in Yanayacu Pucate, one of the best preserved and protected zones of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Guides will point out all of the biodiversity in the area, or dive right into the Amazonian waters where you may even have the opportunity to swim or paddle board alongside the famous pink dolphins. Afterwards, visit the remote indigenous village of San Regis where the local shaman, Carola, lives. Carola is known far and wide in the rainforest as a spiritual caretaker and healer to hundreds of jungle dwellers who travel for miles to see her. She is known as a “White” shaman, a healer and spiritual guide.

After a delicious lunch, visit Nauta Caño Creek for some kayaking or fish for the famous piranha.

This evening, guides will take you on a night safari in search of caiman alligators and birds only active under cover of darkness.

Day3

Pacaya Samiria National Reserve: Fundo Casual / Amazonas / Confluence of the Three Rivers

Rise early this morning to walk the Fundo Casual jungle trail, a hike that takes you deep into the rainforest where the animals are coming to life. The bountiful tropics always rewards early risers with the most abundant and active creatures.

Then, not far from Nauta, stop at the small village of Amazonas. Only 500 people live here but they welcome outsiders with smiling faces. Many are happy to demonstrate how to peel and grate cassava or the tools they use to process rice. See what it’s like in a day in the life of these local riverbank dwellers.

This afternoon, cross over the magnificently colored “Unión de los Ríos” or Confluence of Three Rivers where the Ucayali, Marañón, and Amazon River meet. Take in the spectacular sunset over the rainforest.

This evening, take an opportunity to stop into the Delfin I’s bridge. See the navigation systems, or chat with the captain. Then enjoy stargazing from the observation deck as the ship goes ever deeper into the rainforest.

Deciphering a Peruvian “Chifa” Menu

When the first wave of Chinese immigrants first came to Peru in the late 1800s, they were considered part of the lowest working class, seeking work in mines and sugar plantations after the country outlawed slavery.

When the first wave of Chinese immigrants first came to Peru in the late 1800s, they were considered part of the lowest working class, seeking work in mines and sugar plantations after the country outlawed slavery. The nature of the work meant that more than 95% of these incoming groups were male, and they were mostly from the Canton region of southeastern China. Later in the mid 1900s as political situations shifted in Asia, more people arrived in Peru seeking safety and work in a new world. Today, Peruvian Chinese citizens make up more than 4% of the country’s population.

A result of this cultural blend can be seen in Peru’s “chifa” restaurants, merging traditional coastal and Andean flavors with those that the Chinese brought with them. Each local chifa has essentially the same basic collection of dishes served in a fast and casual style, although higher end chifas incorporate harder-to-find ingredients imported from China. Don’t miss trying some of these classics when you’re looking for a quick meal during your travels in Peru:

Chaufa: Just as it is in many areas of the world, fried rice is the most popular staple of adopted Chinese food. Chaufa found in Peru usually comes with 2 variations: with chicken, or with thin beef strips. Intermixed within are a medley of vegetables.

Tallarin saltado: If you are not in the mood for rice, then try the stir fried noodles. Similar to chaufa, tallarin saltado includes a fresh mix of your choice of meat with vegetables, all tossed around in each chifa’s special sauce blend.

Aeropuerto: It is still a mystery why this dish is named “airport”. However, it is an ideal choice for the indecisive, as it is a combination of both chaufa fried rice and saucy noodles-literally! The two components are made together rather than set on separate halves of the plate.

Tipakay: For a more substantial meal after a long walk or day on the town, tipakay will be sure to fill you up. Pan fried pieces of chicken or beef (sometimes both) are lathered in a rich and sweet tamarind sauce, all of which is laid over a bed of white rice.

Sopa wantan: Quench your thirst after eating so many savory delicacies with a hot, comforting bowl of wonton soup. The soup is a mixture of simple flavored spices and stock. Swimming inside is usually 1 or 2 pieces of boiled wontons filled with small pieces of meat. Diced green onions used as a garnish complete this simple but delicious side.

We would love to hear back about your favorite chifa dish!
