Discovering Uruguay’s Wine Region

Start your winery tour in the birthplace of wine in Uruguay. In the XVIII century, the Jesuits established in the north of the Province of Colonia in Uruguay, where they continued their mission and built the national monument “La Calera de las Huerfanas” in 1741.

Afterwards, visit two wineries in the region of Carmelo, about 80 minutes away from Colonia (the selection of wineries may vary due to their open times). Start with a visit to Bodegas Cordano, a small family-run winery which is led by Ana Paula Cordano and her family in the fifth generation. After a warm reception, visit the vineyards and the production areas. Enjoy a tasting of the Cordano wines in a special atmosphere of the Almacen de La Capilla.

Continue to El Legado Winery, a boutique family-owned winery located in the Carmelo region. The winery’s name, meaning “legacy,”was chosen in honor of Bernardo’s father, Luis Mazurca, who bought the land and planted the vines. Bernardo and his family decided to continue the project and produce wines not because of a family tradition in winemaking, because they “fueled by a true passion” in what they do. The visit includes lunch and tasting of two Tannat and Sirah Wines with cheese platters, sausages, chestnuts, among other tasty delights.

Journey to Panama

Panama boasts miles of secluded beaches, family-friendly eco-lodges, mountains ensconced in rainforests, a wealth of cultural experiences, and of course, the historic Panama Canal. Panama’s appeal has only continued to grow, as more alluring hotels move in and word continues to spread. However, this skinny isthmus still maintains a very laid-back vibe, with small eco-lodges and boutique hotels serving as bases for adventurous pursuits and beach relaxation. We love this destination because of the array of diverse nature and adventures one can have in a short period of time without needing to move around a lot. For families looking for a nature immersion in rainforests, an understanding the evolution of species, and a wide array of adventures, Panama has a ton to offer.  But “laid-back” doesn’t always mean sacrificing sophistication and style — and that’s where our trip planning expertise comes in!

Day1

Arrive in Cienfuegos

Located on Cuba’s south coast, Cienfuegos is a pleasant colonial gem with pockets that look distinctly like 1950s Floridian suburbia. Its private restaurants, or “paladares,” are known for their seafood. Other attractions include the magical Botanical Gardens and the countless old fashioned facades (don’t miss the Catedral de la Purisima Concepción). The marina here is the embarkation point for many catamaran excursions to the southern Keys near Cayo Largo. On the Paseo del Prado, the longest street in Cuba, people-watching and ice cream seem to be the main events.

Explore Trinidad

Trinidad is far and away, and arguably the most beautiful town in Cuba, with multi-colored pastel hued terraces and rust-red roofs. This fertile land of mountain and sea has always brought wealth to lucky locals. In the colonial area, especially between 1750 and 1850, sugar cane was its main economic activity and fabulously wealthy Spanish families built gorgeous mansions around Trinidad’s main square. These days, their descendants rent rooms to visiting foreigners. Mountain and sea collide around Topes de Collantes, producing rich soil for crops. And, as produce is bountiful here, home-cooked meals have always been superior, even in bad economic times. The private restaurants and paladares, and even the meals offered by your own casa particular, are above par.

It’s also rising from its ruins: a good piece of the tourist money that has hit Cuban coffers over the last two decades has been put towards revitalizing Habana Vieja, the old colonial center.

Pinar del Rio and Valley of Vinales

To the west of Havana lies the rolling green hills of Pinar del Rio. This is tobacco-growing country, with an old fashioned agrarian economy. Farmers trot down dusty tracks in spurs, plough the rust-red earth with oxen and sow seeds by hand. The valley of Vinales, spiked with limestone peaks, is a hypnotically beautiful Eden and its eponymously named little town is one of the best weekenders near Havana. Here, a functioning private-sector tourist economy means that old-fashioned country Cuban life has been spruced up for international consumption (in a good way): the porches are recently painted, and the locals are especially cheerful. For visitors, biking, caving and horseback riding in the valley are popular activities.
